Zoo Trip

Over our lovely spring break, I took a trip to the Hogle Zoo. Having not been to the zoo in quite a while, I admit, I was basically psyched out of my mind about going. A bunch of my friends and I all decided to go together for our science term project. We figured just going to the zoo with a bunch of friends would be the easiest way to complete our term requirement. The following blog will be the write up that is required for the science term project. It's a paper about what we learned at the zoo.
The Hogle Zoo has changed a lot since the last time I was there. Along with having a very nice newly redisgned front gate, the zoo has also, in my opinion, improved a lot of the habitats for the animals. For example the elephants and rhinos have a very cool new exhibit with a running river, larger area to move around, and an overall more "real" habitat. I thought the elephants looked very happy! This just shows that the better habitats the animals live in, the happier they will be. And happy animals make for happy visitors. And that makes for GREAT business!

We also saw an owl at the zoo that was rescued from the wild. It was brought to the "zoo doctors" with a very bad injury in its eye, and in order to save its life, the doctors removed the little owl's eye. The owl is now very healthy and is functioning just fine even without it's eye. So, if you think the zoo is horrible place for animals to be kept, just think of this, without the zoo, that little owl would've died. The zoo isn't so bad after all, eh?!

In the Discovery Land area of the zoo, I learned a little about the animals that inhabit the desert areas of the world. We saw some cute little prairie dogs and learned that they live in packs. They burrow holes and that is where they live. They are often hunted by large birds, snakes, or other larger mamals like foxes. They are fast though and pretty sneaky as we found out first hand.

In the reptile exhibit we saw a HUGE anaconda. Two alligators and a bunch of lizards and turtles. We also saw poison dart frogs. I learned that even though these frogs are tiny, their poison is very deadly. But only if there poison gets into your veins. Back in the day, warriors would use these frogs to put poison on their arrows. So when an enemy was hit, they were injected with the poison and like KILLED!! But I am sure you've heard that before!
Yeah, the zoo was fun!! Ok, not quite as exciting as it was when you were five, but it's still a fun place to visit every once in a while. So, I recommend taking a trip to the zoo for your science term project. It is easy, pretty fun, and you can get a LOT of GREAT pictures!! And so what if they are not actually of the animals!
