You watch it on T.V. and you hear it on the radio. The mind poison. Whether you catch a glimpse of it on VH1 or it catches you by suprise on the evening news, the poison will find you. It knows where you are and it knows how to intrigue you. Once it has you hypnotized, it has the ability fill your mind with violent and vulgar images, trap you in thoughts of gore and profanity, and it even has the ability to terrify you. "Just avoid it. Don't let it get in your head." Is that possible? Are you really able to escape the harsh reality of the world around you?
Unless you've spent your whole life in a convent, or you were raised by the Amish, you have probably witnessed plenty of crude or offensive material. You've listened to it in the lyrics of your favorite rock or hip hop song. (Or yes, even country.) You've seen it the half hour of your favorite reality show. And even though it may not personnaly offend you, it is still considered "bad". For in today's world, society is trying to find something to blame all of the problems of the world on. They choose to blame all of the violence, profanity and death on the shows and songs that they themselves choose, or allow their kids, to watch and listen to. And majority of these songs and T.V. shows "just happen" to be aimed at the teenage population. So yeah, apparently it's our fault. It's our fault that while we sat in our English class, somewhere across the country, a couple of idiots decided to take a gun into their highschool. It's all because of the music we listen to that some girl decided to get high, and then died of an overdose. I mean come on guys, IT'S ALL OUR FAULT, right!? Wrong. We like the shows that we like. We want to listen to the music that makes us feel good. If that music swears or tells you it's cool to smoke pot and to "Party like it's ya birthday", than that's what you're gonna hear. It all depends on if you are listening to the music or if you are following the music.
If you flip on the radio or MTV every once in a while, then you know what the popular songs are right now. You know what message these popular songs are sending out. So, do you pay attention to the message or do you simply enjoy the music for it's catchy beat? After you listen to the song or watch the show, do you go out into the world and apply what you have just heard or seen into your daily life? If so, you are the reason people can get away with blaming music and television for the world's problems. When you listen to a song on the radio, chances are that it is either sending out the message "Let's party and get crazy" or something along the lines of sex, drugs, and violence. World peace and abstinence don't seem to be a favorite topic for most of today's artists. This is where proper judgment and responsibility come in. When a song or show promotes drug use or the use of crude language, that doesn't mean that you have to go along with it. We are all smart enough to know that drugs are bad! Violence is bad! Most things on television are not to be repeated!
"Well, 50 Cent's new song told me that it is cool to get high and then rob the local bank. I just did what the song said!"
This is no freaking excuse. 50 cent and Diddy are rich and can make songs about whatever they want. They don't care who hears it or how people will interprut the song. Diddy isn't gonna think about if some vonerable teenager will hear his new single and then decide to smoke some weed. Diddy won't take the responsibility! You have to! You have to trust yourself enough to know if you are able to listen to a song and NOT follow the message it sends. Enjoy music! Get up and dance to Sean Paul's hit single. Shake yo' booty! You have to be smart enough to not let the media influence the way you live your life.
Sex, drugs, and violence are the all apart of the poison that everybody in this world will have to deal with. Like it or not. So you better learn how to deal handlem that poison now. Don't try to blame the shows you watch for the foul language you choose to use. If you can't handle seeing things on T.V. without repeating them, don't watch T.V.! If you find yourself slacking off at school because a song on the radio said that school is a waste, don't listen to that station. You have to be repsonsible for yourself and your actions. Yes, the poison can always find you through violent and vulgar televison and lyrics. But when you get in trouble for repeating what you heard in the lyrics of your favorite song, your life will be ruined. And the mind poison will not take the blame.

The same argument could be made about books. The only influence they have is the influence we give them, yet a lot of them get banned for being offensive or for promoting negative behavior. Speaking of which, this is Banned Books Week! Let's celebrate! Read a banned book today!
